DIY Home Sensory Activity: Alphabet Hunt

Updated: Aug 3, 2021

OVERVIEW

Prep time: 10 minutes

Difficulty: Easy

Estimated Cost: 30 AED

Mess level: Small

Age: 18 months plus

What you need:

  • Large container filled with rice

  • Alphabet letters,

  • Food colouring and maybe some essence.

Instructions:

Mixed thoroughly the food colouring and essence through the rice (I have a separate sheet on how to do this) and then add alphabet letters into the box.

Notes

You can buy so many different types of letters ranging in price for plastic magnetic ones to durable wooden ones.

Benefits:

Make learning your alphabet fun by searching for alphabet letters in a sensory tub with scented coloured rice. This activity is not only a great game to motivate kids to learn their alphabet and have fun, it will also develop their fine motor skills, eye & hand coordination and sensory skills - development of the sense of touch.

Ways to adapt:

  • If you don't have time to colour the rice no problem its works just as well or swap with flour or even better moon sand (See separate sheet on how to make)

  • If you don't like the mess try hiding the letters in a box of cotton wool or bring out side and make some alphabet soup.

  • You can of course use any objects and play hide and seek with these
