DIY Home Sensory Activity: DIY Kinetic Sand

Updated: Aug 24, 2021

OVERVIEW:

Prep time: 15 minutes

Difficulty: Medium

Estimated Cost: 20 AED

Mess level: Mediumn

What you need:

  • Flour

  • Oil

  • Food dye

  • Tub or tuff tray to keep the sand contained

  • Tools you might like to add

Instructions:

You want an 8:1 ratio of flour to oil. So 4 cups flour and 1/2 cup oil, 8 cups flour and 1 cup oil, etc. Mix them together (with color if desired) until the flour still feels silky and sandy, but will hold a shape if you squeeze it in your hands. Add food coloring for colour and tool/toys and play!

Benefits:

Children can use their imagination and make various shapes using molds and cookie cutters. It is also a new fun sensory experience that is different from sand. It builds children's fine motor skills (finger strengthening, dexterity, in-hand manipulation, etc) It also builds on bilateral coordination skills (using both hands together to mold and shape), and also improves visual-motor skills such as eye-hand coordination.

Ways to Adapt:

You can play with kinetic sand in a similar way as you would wet sand with molds and various tools.

You can develop small world play by adding miniature objects etc sea, space, farm, mermaid etc.

Notes:

Store air-tight container in a cool room for long-lasting use.
