DIY Home Sensory Activity: Moon sand

Updated: Aug 3, 2021

OVERVIEW

Prep time: 10 minutes

Difficulty: Easy

Estimated Cost: 10 AED

Mess level: Medium

Age: 2 plus

What you need

  • Tray/trough

  • 8 cups of flour

  • 1 cup of baby oil

  • Tools/scoops etc

Instructions:

Prepare play tray/trough.

Mix flour with baby oil.

Encourage the children to mix the ‘sand’ and let it run through their fingers.

Ask them questions about colour and texture.

Tip:

Colour the sand with a few drops of liquid food colouring. To give your moon sand a scent, add a few drops of baking extract such as lemon or vanilla. You can also add spices to ‘spice’ things up!

Benefits:

When children use moon sand they enhance their sensory skills, start to build on their language development (by using descriptive words), fine-tune their fine and gross motor skills, develop their imagination, and enjoy open-ended play. Children can also learn about colours and begin to build their mathematical abilities.

Ways to adapt:

  • Add measuring tools, containers and funnels to the sand and encourage the children to use them to filter the sand. Ask them what happens when they do this.

  • Encourage them to construct shapes with the sand by using moulds and spoons (and their hands).

  • Ask questions: Does the sand stay in the shape? Why does it stay in the shape? Could it be because we added baby oil? Does sand without baby oil stay in a shape? Encourage the children to use their imagination to build cities or other creations with the sand.
