DIY Home Sensory Activity: Music Shaker

OVERVIEW

Prep time: 2 minutes

Difficulty: Easy Peasy

Estimated Cost: 10 AED

Mess level: Small

Age: New Born

What you need:

For rice shaker:

  • Water bottle and rice

For tambourine:

  • x2 paper plates, rice, and tape.

Instructions:

Rice shaker: Add rice to bottle

Tambourine: Tape x2 paper plates together with rice inside.

Notes:

The rice can be replaced with other dried food eg chick peas.

Benefits:

Toddlers will love exploring the different sounds they can create. It will also encourage toddlers to explore through their senses, experimenting with a range of materials. This will all support toddlers developing coordination, fine motor skills and early rhythm and rhymes.

While your toddler is having fun shaking, so much more is happening than we often realize. The brain is getting a great workout! They are not just shaking, they are learning how their bodies move in space, how their body parts interact with each other, how to listen and change sounds, follow basic musical concepts (temp and dynamics) and practice their fine motor skills.

Ways to adapt:

Create rainbow shakers with dyed rice in different colors and different amounts.

Try different activities, for example shaking fast and slow, or saying “stop” where they have to freeze.
