Montessori Activities Stereognostic or Mystery Bag

Prep time: 10 minutes

Difficulty: Easy Peasy

Estimated Cost: All home-based objects

Mess level: Non

What you need

  • Bag / cloth opaque

  • Stone

  • Clip

  • Leaf

  • Dice

  • Mini toys

  • Etc...

Simply put some everyday household items in a bag (a cloth opaque bag works best) and ask your child to identify each item using touch only.

Make sure your child can identify the majority of the items other wise they will become uninterested.

This helps to refine the child's stereognosis sense and usually it's a lot of fun too.

Good to know:

The mystery bag, also called the stereognosis bag, was designed to help children develop their ability to visualize objects using only their sense of touch. This work is well-loved by little ones because it is both challenging and fun.

Maria Montessori’s curriculum was unique in that it included the sensorial materials—works specifically created to refine the learners’ senses—alongside the traditional math, language, and culture disciplines
